Panthers capture Colby Tip-Off Classic

WATERVILLE, Maine - Plymouth State College got the 2000-01 women's basketball season off to a strong start over the weekend, capturing the Colby College Tip-Off Classic with wins over Husson and Colby.

The Panthers knocked off Husson in the opener Friday, 78-77, and came back to earn the title with an 81-73 triumph over the hosts. PSC opened last season by winning the MIT Tip-Off Classic. Playing without their two senior captains, Krystyna Zagorski (Matawan, NJ) and Kate Fillion (Littleton, NH), PSC relied on its young players to win the tournament. Zagorski was out with a sprained ankle and Fillion is suffering from a case of mononucleosis.

Leading the way for the Panthers were sophomores Whitney Morin (Derby Line, Vt.) and Jenn Pelletier (Derry, N.H.). Morin scored 11 points in the Husson game and added a game-high 19 points against Colby and was selected tournament Most Valuable Player. Pelletier contributed 15 points in both contests and joined Morin on the All-Tournament Team.

The Husson game was as close as the score indicates. Tied 39-all at the half, it remained a one-point game in the final minute. Freshman Erica Perry (Fryeburg, Maine) sunk a pair of free throws and Pelletier drove to the hoop for a bucket to give the Panthers the victory. Sophomore Courtney Albert (Hudson, NH) led PSC with 20 points, and Pelletier and sophomore Heather Adey (Nashua, N.H.) added 15 apiece. PSC had five players score in double figures in the championship game victory over Colby. In addition to Morin and Pelletier, junior Tammi Waters (Wilmington, Vt.) scored 12 points, junior Megan Fournier (East Waterboro, Maine) added 11 and sophomore Virginia Rohrborn (Salisbury, N.H.) contributed 10. The Panthers scored 30 of their 81 points from the free throw line.

The Panthers, 2-0, are off until Tuesday, Nov. 28, when they travel to Gordon College (6 p.m.). The home opener isn't until Dec. 2nd against Little East Conference foe Eastern Connecticut.
