PSC defeats Coast Guard to move to 5-1

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Krystyna Zagorski (Matawan, N.J.) scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Tuesday evening, leading Plymouth State College's women's basketball team to a 71-51 non-conference victory over the Coast Guard Academy at Foley Gymnasium.

The victory improved PSC to 5-1 overall, while the Bears dropped to 1-5. Zagorski canned eight of 12 field goal attempts to pace the Panther offensive attack. She was the only PSC player to score in double figures, as 14 different players got into the game. A pressuring Panther defense registered 22 steals and forced 34 Coast guard turnovers. The Bears trailed by only one point (18-17) with 5:52 left in the first half, but PSC went on a 20-5 run to close out the half and hold a 38-22 lead at the break.

The Panthers scored eight of the first 10 points in the second half and cruised home the rest of the way. Freshman Erica Perry (Fryeburg, Maine) added nine points to the PSC effort, and junior Megan Fournier (East Waterboro, Maine) and sophomore Whitney Morin (Derby Line, Vt.) each contributed eight points. Coast Guard placed three players in double figures in the scoring department. Sophomore Tessa Mueller (Torrington, Conn.) and freshman Tanesha Tyus (Dale City, Va.) each tossed in 13 points, and sophomore Kristen VanHaverbeke (Stafford, Va.) added 10.

PSC returns to action Thursday (Dec. 7) with a non-conference game at Colby-Sawyer (7:00 p.m.). Coast Guard travels Thursday to Albertus Magnus (5:30 p.m.)
