Panthers hold off St. Joseph's in opener
WATERVILLE, Maine - The Plymouth State College women's basketball team opened the season with a 73-66 victory over St. Joseph's College Friday night in the opening round of the Colby Tip-Off Tournament.
The Panthers advance to the championship game Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against the host Mules, who dispatched Roger Williams in the other first round game, 81-39.
Five players scored in double figures to lead a balanced Panther attack. Senior guard Whitney Morin (Derby Line, Vt.) led the team with 22 points, six assists, and three three-point field goals, and senior point guard Jenn Pelletier (Derry, N.H.) contributed 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and six steals.
Seniors Courtney Albert (Hudson, N.H.) and Heather Adey (Nashua, N.H.) did the work down low, Albert recording 14 points and eight rebounds and Adey adding 12 points and nine boards. Junior Mandi Allen (Blue Hill, Maine) provided 10 points off the PSC bench.
Abbie Rice led the Monks with 18 points, while Laura Pelkey chipped in with 15 points and Morgan Brownlee scored 11 points and collected a team-high eight rebounds.
Plymouth State took a big lead early in the game and led by 12 points at halftime, 37-25. The Monks rallied in the second half and actually took the lead at one point, but PSC held on down the stretch.
PSC will be looking for its fourth consecutive season-opening championship after winning the MIT Tournament in 1999, the Colby Classic in 2000, and the Swarthmore (Pa.) Tip-Off Tourney in 2001.
