FT. MYERS, Fla. - Four players scored in double figures Tuesday afternoon as the Florida Gulf Coast University women's basketball team handed Plymouth State College a 92-53 defeat in a non-conference game at Alico Arena.
Rebecca Stewart led the hosts with 18 points, while Trish Fleming contributed 16 points, Jennifer Santana added 15 and Megan Jones had 13. Robyn Swain also collected 17 rebounds for the winners.
FGCU held a 48-35 advantage at halftime, but outscored the Panthers 44-18 in the second half to win going away. The hosts had a 43-28 advantage in rebounding while forcing PSC into 33 turnovers. Florida Gulf Coast is a former NAIA school which is now playing NCAA Division II and plans to move to Division I.
The Panthers got a strong performance from Courtney Albert (Hudson, N.H.), as the senior forward hit 9-of-14 shots and finished with a game-high 25 points. She was the only PSC player to reach double figures in scoring.
The outcome gives PSC a 5-3 record, while FGCU improves to 10-1.
The Panthers are back in action on Thursday (Jan. 9) with a non-conference home game against nationally-ranked Bowdoin (5:30 p.m.).
