PSC comes back to down Newbury

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College overcame a 12-point halftime deficit Thursday evening and pulled out a 76-67 victory over Newbury College in a non-conference women's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.

PSC got back on the winning track, rebounding from a tough loss Tuesday at Southern Maine to improve to 15-7 overall. Newbury had its four-game winning streak snapped and fell to 14-8.

The visitors enjoyed the lead most of the first half, taking a 10-point advantage (28-18) with 8:20 to play and maintaining a 12-point bulge (42-30) at the break. Newbury hit on 46 percent of its shots in the opening 20 minutes, while holding PSC to a 31 percent shooting average.

After trading baskets in the opening minutes of the second half, PSC went on a 17-5 spurt over a seven-minute stretch, and took its first lead (55-53) since early in the first half with 10 minutes to play. It was still a one-point game (62-61) with five minutes remaining but PSC pulled away down the stretch, outscoring Newbury 14-6 the rest of the way.

The shooting percentages were reversed in the second half, as PSC hit on 53 percent after the break and Newbury managed to make only 38 percent. The visitors turned the ball over 30 times, including 20 in the second half.

The Panthers were led by senior Whitney Morin (Derby Line, Vt.), who had 20 points and nine rebounds. Senior Jenn Pelletier (Derry, N.H.) added 15 points and seven steals, senior Courtney Albert (Hudson, N.H.) contributed 14 points, all in the second half, and sophomore Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, N.H.) chipped in with 10 points.

The Nighthawks had a balanced offense, with sophomore Ebony White (Lynn, Mass.) recording 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, junior Quishema Rose (Hartford, Conn.) adding 13 points, sophomore Shanisha Mitchell (Brockton, Mass.) with 11, and freshman Victoria Anderson (Foxboro, Mass.) contributing 10 points.

The Panthers are on the road for their next encounter Saturday in a Little East Conference match-up at UMass Boston (1:00 p.m.). Newbury plays again Saturday at Elms College (1:00 p.m.).
