PSU Women’s Basketball dumps Castleton State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Mandi Allen (Blue Hill, Maine) scored 17 points Tuesday evening, leading Plymouth State University's women's basketball team to a 64-55 non-conference victory over Castleton State College in the home opener at Foley Gymnasium.

Allen hit 8-of-14 from the field, while also grabbing seven rebounds. Juniors Lauren Devereaux (Hope Valley, R.I.) and Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, N.H.) were also solid contributors, with Devereaux recording a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Oswalt adding 10 points.

The visiting Spartans got outstanding performances from junior Casey Wedge (Bristol, Vt.) and senior Beth Ratner (South Easton, Mass.). Wedge finished with a game-high 25 points, hitting five of her eight baskets from three-point range, and Ratner added 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

Plymouth State led most of the first half, including a 10-point advantage (25-15) with seven minutes remaining, before settling for a 33-32 advantage at the break. PSU got its lead back up to double digits (54-42) midway through the second half, but couldn't shake the pesky Spartans. Castleton State got to within five points twice in the final five minutes, but the Panthers held off the visitors for the win.

PSU shot only 41 percent for the game, but held Castleton State to a 37 percent shooting clip and outrebounded the Spartans, 45-32.

The Panthers, 2-1, are back in action with a non-conference game next Tuesday (Dec. 2) at New England College (7:00 p.m.). The Spartans, 0-3, return to play next Tuesday at Middlebury (5:30 p.m.).
