RIC nips PSU in womens hoop double OT thriller, 84-83
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman forward Kari Geisler (Derry, N.H.) nailed two clutch free throws with 5.1 seconds remaining in the second overtime Thursday night to lift Rhode Island College past Plymouth State University, 84-83, in a thrilling Little East Conference women's basketball game.
The Panthers had a chance to win at the buzzer, but junior forward Lauren Devereaux's (Hope Valley, R.I.) last second attempt rimmed out. RIC improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the Little East, while PSU falls to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. It was the fourth consecutive victory for RIC and snaps a nine-game losing streak to the Panthers dating back to 1999.
PSU held a 61-56 lead in the last minute in regulation play, but missed opportunities to seal the win at the free throw line, and RIC came back to force overtime, tied at 61-apiece. The Panthers took the lead again in the first extra frame, but the Anchorwomen battled back to force a second overtime, deadlocked at 73-all.
Geisler had 29 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Anchorwomen. Junior forward Heather Pettigrew (Cranston, R.I.) also posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior guard Mandi Allen (Blue Hill, Maine) scored 22 points and grabbed 11 boards to lead the Panthers. Junior forward Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, N.H.) added 15 points and nine boards, and Devereaux and freshman Ashley White (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in with 11 points apiece.
Both teams get right back into action with LEC games Saturday at 1:00 p.m., RIC hosting Eastern Connecticut and PSU entertaining UMass-Dartmouth.
