PSU Womens Hoop defeats Johnson & Wales
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior forward Lauren Devereaux (Hope Valley, R.I.) scored a career-high 15 points Sunday afternoon, leading the Plymouth State University women's basketball team to a 59-45 non-conference victory over Johnson & Wales University in the first action of the New Year at the Harborside Recreation and Athletic Center.
The win improves the Panthers to 5-3 on the season, while the host Wildcats drop to 1-8.
Devereaux, playing in her home state, hit all five of her field goal attempts and 5-of-8 from the line, while adding four rebounds and three assists. She was the only Panther to score in double figures. Senior Mandi Allen (Blue Hill, Maine) and junior Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, N.H.) each finished with identical totals of eight points and team-highs of five rebounds and four assists, but combined to shoot only 6-of-27 from the field.
Freshman Nicole Milton (Windsor, Conn.) was the lone scorer in double figures for the Wildcats, finishing with 10 points.
Plymouth State jumped out to an early lead and had their first double-digit advantage (18-7) midway through the first half. JWU cut the deficit to seven (21-14) but PSU used a 9-0 run to take a 30-14 lead into the break.
It was more of the same in the second half as the visiting Panthers extended their lead to 20 (34-14) two minutes in. Plymouth State would lead by as much as 25 points (57-32) before coasting home with the win.
There's little rest for the Panthers, as they return to action Monday (Jan. 5) with a non-conference road game at UMaine Farmington (7:00 p.m.).
