Third-ranked Bowdoin mauls PSU Women
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team, ranked third in the latest Division III national poll, improved to 9-0 on the year Thursday night with a 74-34 non-conference victory over visiting Plymouth State University.
The Polar Bears extended their home winning streak to 30 games, dating back to February of 2001. Plymouth drops to 5-5 this season.
The Polar Bears wasted no time gaining control of the contest, connecting on eight of their first 12 shots and sprinting to a 19-4 lead just seven minutes into the game. Bowdoin would extend the lead to as many as 26 points in the first half before leading 42-20 at intermission. The Polar Bears held the Panthers to just 14 points in the second half.
Twelve different Bowdoin players scored in the win, led by Erika Nickerson's 12 points and 11 boards off the bench. Lora Trenkle scored 10 points with six assists and six rebounds. Junior Lauren Devereaux (Hope Valley, R.I.) led the Panthers with seven points as PSU managed to shoot just 24 percent for the game. Bowdoin held a 58-34 edge in rebounds, including a 22-11 advantage on the offensive glass. The Polar Bears also exhibited tremendous passing, assisting on 21 of their 28 field goals, while forcing 25 Panther turnovers.
It doesn't get any easier for PSU as the Panthers face another nationally-ranked team in their next outing, a Little East Conference affair Saturday at seventh-ranked Eastern Connecticut State University (1:00 p.m.).
