No. 7 Eastern Conn. Womens Hoop rolls past PSU
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Senior All-America Allison Coleman (Jewett City, Conn.) scored a game-high 22 points to pace four double-digit scorers as the Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team won its sixth straight game, an 80-52 Little East Conference decision over Plymouth State University Saturday afternoon at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.
Ranked No. 7 in Division III, Eastern (10-1 overall, 2-1 in conference play) won its 46th regular-season game in its last 48 home tries and posted its eighth straight home win over Plymouth State (5-6 overall, 1-2 in the LEC). The Panthers, last year's ECAC New England Division III champions, eliminated Eastern in overtime in the semifinals of last year's conference tournament at Gorham, Maine.
Coleman's point total was four shy of her career average against PSU. She also added five rebounds, five asssist and four steals. Freshman Sandy Mosley (Goshen, Conn.) followed with 15 points, senior Kathleen Burdelski (Newington, Conn.) added 11 and senior Deanne Prior (Scituate, RI) 10. Eastern's four double-digit scorers combined to shoot 69.7 percent (23-for-33) from the floor. As a team, the Warriors sank 59.0 percent of their field goals, 62.5 percent in a 43-point second half.
Senior Mandi Allen (Blue Hill, Maine) led the Panthers with 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting, and junior Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, N.H.) added 11 points and five assists. PSU played without freshman starting point guard Ashley White (Merrimack, N.H.).
After four straight road games to start 2004, PSU returns home to host UMass Boston Tuesday at Foley Gymnasium (5:30 p.m.) in a Little East Conference game.
