PSU Womens Hoop no match for Southern Maine
GORHAM, Maine - Senior Jen Webster (Braintree, Mass.) scored a game-high 26 points and the University of Southern Maine Huskies extended their winning streak to 14 games Tuesday evening with an 82-62 triumph over Little East Conference-foe Plymouth State University at the Hill Gym.
Ranked second in this week's D3Hoops.com national poll, Southern Maine improved to 17-1 overall and 8-0 in the conference, while Plymouth State slipped to 8-10 and 3-5.
The Huskies led from start to finish after jumping out to a 9-0 lead. Southern Maine grabbed its first double-digit lead at 14-4 with 16:01 remaining, and a three-point play with 2:13 remaining gave Southern Maine its largest lead of the first half at 41-19. Plymouth State scored the final six points of the frame to enter the break trailing by a 41-25 margin.
The Huskies maintained an 18-22 point lead throughout the majority of the second half before pulling away in the closing minutes.
Southern Maine received 12 points from sophomore Tiffany Jones (Skowhegan, Maine) and 11 points and a team-high six rebounds from sophomore Ashley Marble (Topsfield, Maine).
Sophomore Katie Susat (Glastonbury, Conn.) led Plymouth State with 16 points, while freshman Colleen Mahoney (North Attleboro, Mass.) added 11 points, and freshman Heather Thomas (Merrimack, N.H.) and senior Mandi Allen (Blue Hill, Maine) added 10 points apiece.
The teams return to action Saturday, when Southern Maine travels to Western Connecticut and Plymouth State ventures to UMass Dartmouth. (1:00 p.m.).
