PSU Womens Hoop squeaks by Newbury
BROOKLINE, Mass. - Freshman Heather Thomas (Merrimack, N.H.) matched her career-highs with 18 points and nine rebounds Tuesday night, as the Plymouth State University women's basketball team squeaked by Newbury College in overtime, 70-60.
The win brings Plymouth State's record to 10-10 overall while drops Newbury to 6-10.
The Nighthawks received great first half play from sophomore Danielle Wisniowski (Kensington, CT), who had 13 points. Newbury found themselves up 29-26 at the half.
The second half saw much of same back and forth action. The Nighthawks found themselves down by as many as eight with three minutes to go, but were able to battle back and send the game into overtime, tied at 56-all. However, it was all Panthers in the extra frame as they outscored Newbury 14-4 and came away with the victory.
Thomas scored seven of her 18 points in overtime, and finished the night successful on 7-of-11 shot attempts. PSU also received double-double efforts from senior Mandi Allen (Blue Hill, Maine) and freshman Colleen Mahoney (North Andover, Mass.). Allen scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Mahoney had 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Junior Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, N.H.) also contributed 12 points for the Panthers.
Despite the loss, Newbury received great play from junior Shanisha Mitchell (Brockton, Mass.) who led all scorers with 22 points and dished out six assists, grabbed five rebounds and had three steals.
PSU returns to Little East Conference action on Saturday, hosting Eastern Connecticut at Foley Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Conn. is ranked sixth in this week's d3hoops.com national poll.
