UMass Boston upsets PSU Women’s Hoop

BOSTON, Mass. - Senior Indya Mitchell (Weymouth, Mass.) hit a lay-up with six seconds remaining in the game Saturday, lifting the University of Massachusetts Boston past Plymouth State University, 54-53, in a Little East Conference women's basketball game at the Clark Athletic Center.

The victory snapped UMB's 31-game losing streak to PSU, which dated back to 1988. The Beacons also stopped a current five-game losing streak and improved to 7-14 overall and 3-9 in the LEC, while PSU lost its third straight to drop to 10-13 and 4-8.

This was anyone's game all along. The hosts went up by eight points (20-12) in the first half, but PSU responded with a 13-2 run to take a 25-22 lead with a minute to go in the half. UMD hit three free throws with no time on the clock to deadlock the game at the break, 27-27.

There were 11 lead changes in the second half and neither team led by more than four points. The sixth tie of the contest (52-52) came with 1:40 to play on a basket by PSU junior Betsy Oswalt (Jaffrey, N.H.). Oswalt then put the Panthers ahead by one with a free throw with 25 seconds on the clock, but Mitchell grabbed an offensive rebound for the Beacons with 17 seconds left, and following a timeout, hit the game-winning shot with six seconds to play.

PSU had one last chance to tie or win it, but missed a pair of free throws with one second left.

Mitchell led the Beacons with 11 points, and sophomore Danielle Jones (Malden, Mass.) added 10 points off the UMB bench.

Junior Lauren Devereaux (Hope Valley, R.I.) had a strong game for the Panthers, putting up a team-high 17 points and nine rebounds. She hit 8-of-12 from the floor and added an assist, a blocked shot and two steals. Oswalt finished with 14 points, and senior Mandi Allen (Blue Hill, Maine) and freshman Heather Thomas (Merrimack, N.H.) each contributed eight points.

Both teams return to action with conference games at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, PSU hosting league-leading and #2 ranked Southern Maine and UMB visiting UMass Dartmouth.
