- Sophomores Denise Ridge (Milton, Mass.) and Kristen Reske (Duxbury, Mass.) combined for 45 points Saturday afternoon as the University of Massachusetts Boston women's basketball team upset Plymouth State University for the second time this season, 91-77, in a Little East Conference game at Foley Gymnasium.
Ridge hit 10-of-16 from the field to finish with a game-high 24 points, while Reske made 7-of-10 shots and ended up with 21 points. They helped UMB improve to 6-17 overall and 2-10 in conference play, with both LEC wins coming over Plymouth State. The Panthers drop to 9-13 overall and 5-7 in the Little East.
Plymouth State won 31 straight games over UMB from 1988-2004, but since breaking the streak last season, the Beacons have won three in a row over the Panthers.
UMB also got strong contributions from sophomore Erin Towne (East Taunton, Mass.) and junior Agata Matel (Dorchester, Mass.) and Lydia Coverdale (Malden, Mass.) Towne recorded 15 points and seven rebounds, Matel added eight points and a game-high 13 boards, and Coverdale chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds, and 11 assists.
Freshman Joy DePalo (Enfield, N.H.) led the Panthers, scoring a career-high 18 points for the second straight outing. Sophomore Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass.) contributed 14 points off the bench, the second-highest scoring performance of her career, and senior Lauren Devereaux (Hope Valley, R.I.) chipped in with 10 points. Devereaux and Linehan shared team-high honors in rebounds with six apiece.
The Beacons led nearly the entire game. They maintained a single-digit advantage most of the first half and held a 39-34 bulge at the break. After UMB extended the margin to nine points (45-36) early in the second half, PSU went on a 12-2 run to take its first lead since early in the first half, 48-47, with 16:30 on the clock.
UMB got the lead right back and never trailed again, extending its lead to 10 points (66-56) with 10 minutes remaining and getting it up to 17 points (76-59) with seven minutes to play. PSU got no closer than 11 points the rest of the way.
PSU wraps up the regular season next week with LEC road games Tuesday at Southern Maine (5:30 p.m.) and Saturday at Western Connecticut (1:00 p.m.). UMB returns home to host UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.) before visiting Eastern Connecticut next Saturday (1:00 p.m.)
