PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior McKenzie Ferguson (Conway, N.H./Kennett) scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds Friday evening to lead the Plymouth State University women's basketball team to a 64-57 victory over Roger Williams University in the opening game of the Cobblestone Inn Invitational Women's Basketball Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.
The Panthers move on to Saturday's 3:00 p.m. championship game, where they will play Daniel Webster College. DWC outlasted Mount Ida College in overtime in Friday's nightcap, 73-67. Roger Williams and Mount Ida will meet in the consolation game Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Ferguson, playing in her first game in a Panther uniform after transferring to PSU from Endicott College, shared team-high scoring honors with sophomore guard Meghan MacDonald (Salem, N.H.), who also had 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Junior forward Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass./Savio Prep) also contributed 11 points and eight boards for the Panthers.
PSU also got 17 points combined from its other two starters, as juniors Ashley White (Merrimack, N.H.) and Colleen Mahoney (North Attleboro, Mass.) added nine and eight points, respectively.
Junior Caitlin Elnitsky (Southbury, Conn.) led all scorers for 20 points for the Hawks, while also collecting a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Caitlyn Leone (Irvington, N.Y.) added 14 points and eight boards for the visitors, while sophomore Kristin Leonard (Cooperstown, N.Y.) came off the bench to chip in with eight points.
It was an evenly played game in the first half, with the Panthers holding on to a three-point lead at the break, 31-28. PSU opened up a 10-point advantage early in the second half, but Roger Williams answered with an 11-1 run to tie things up at 42-all with 10 minutes remaining.
The Hawks led by one (47-46) with less than five minutes to play, but PSU scored the next seven points and never relinquished the lead, holding off the Hawks for the seven-point victory.
