PSU Women’s Hoop wins Cobblestone Inn Invitational

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University had four players score in double figures Saturday afternoon, and the Panthers went on to capture the Cobblestone Inn Invitational Women's Basketball Tournament with a 66-43 victory over Daniel Webster College in the championship game at Foley Gymnasium.

Junior guard Ashley White (Merrimack, N.H.) led PSU with 13 points and seven assists in just 21 minutes, and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. She averaged 11 points, five assists and four rebounds in the two-day affair while shooting 50 percent from the field. Junior forward Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass./Savio Prep) joined White on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 10.5 points and 9.0 rebounds over the two days, including a double-double on Saturday with 10 points and 10 boards.

Junior Colleen Mahoney (North Attleboro, Mass.) also contributed 12 points for the Panthers, while sophomore guard Meghan MacDonald (Salem, N.H.) finished the day with 11 points and four assists.

Sophomore Erin Moseley (Sterling, Mass.) was Daniel Webster's representative on the All-Tournament Team after finishing with a team-high 14 points and nine rebounds in Saturday's championship game. Sophomore guard Katie Zahn (Pelham, N.H.) chipped in with 13 points and five boards.

Plymouth State scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back. PSU led by 19 points at the midway point of the first half (23-4) and maintained a 14-point margin at the break, 32-18. The Panthers opened the second half with a 20-6 run and coasted home the rest of the way.

Roger Williams defeated Mount Ida in the consolation game, 76-46.

This marks Plymouth State's fourth season-opening tournament title in the past seven years. The Panthers also captured the championship of the MIT Tip-Off Tournament in 1999, the Colby Tip-Off Classic in 2000, and the Swarthmore Tip-Off Tourney in 2001.

PSU, 2-0, is home again Tuesday night with a non-conference match-up against Castleton State (5:30 p.m.) Daniel Webster, 1-1, is back in action on Sunday, Nov. 27, at St. Joseph's College (Vt.) at 7:00 p.m.
