PSU Womens Basketball falls to Western Conn. in LEC opener
DANBURY, Conn. - Western Connecticut State University outscored Plymouth State University 11-4 in the final two minutes of the game Saturday afternoon, pulling out a 74-66 victory in the Little East Conference women's basketball opener for both teams at Feldman Arena.
The game was tied for the 10th time, 47-47, with 14 minutes left in the game before WestConn would take its largest lead of the day, 57-49, with eight minutes to play. PSU battled back and pulled to within one point (63-62) with less than two minutes on the clock, but the Colonials held off the Panthers, making six straight free throws down the stretch.
Junior Mallory Stevens (Seymour, Conn) led three WestConn players in double figures with 16 points. She also led all players with 11 rebounds and four blocked shots on the afternoon. Sophomore Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Jennifer Kancler (Columbia, Conn.) added 14 and 11, respectively, and Brittany Downing (New Haven, Conn.) had an outstanding game on the defensive end with nine rebounds and a game-high five steals.
Plymouth State also had three players in double figures in scoring. Junior Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass.) led the way for the Panthers with 15 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Meghan MacDonald (Salem, N.H.) and junior Colleen Mahoney (North Attleboro, Mass.) added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
PSU, 3-3 overall, returns home for a non-conference game Tuesday against Middlebury (5:30 p.m.). WestConn, 2-4, plays at Western New England Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
