Middlebury needs overtime to defeat PSU Women’s Basketball

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Katie Fisher (Oakland, Cal.) scored 17 points to lead five players in double figures Tuesday evening as the Panthers of Middlebury College defeated the Panthers of Plymouth State University in overtime, 75-64, in non-conference women's basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.

Middlebury won its fourth straight contest to improve to 7-1 on the season, while PSU dropped its fourth in a row to fall to 3-4. Plymouth State has played overtime affairs in two of its last three outings.

Joining Fisher in the double figures department for Middlebury were senior Katie Fehsenfeld (Zionsville, Ind.) with 14 points, classmate Maryanne Verzosa (Jamaica, N.Y.) with 11, and sophomore Alanna Young (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Ashley Barron (Brockton, Mass.) with 10 apiece. Young also collected a game-high 12 rebounds.

Junior Ashley White (Merrimack, N.H.) led the Panthers with 16 points and six steals, while sophomore Joy DePalo (Enfield, N.H.) came off the bench to toss in 11 points. Juniors McKenzie Ferguson (Conway, N.H.) and Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass.) added nine points each, and classmate Heather Thomas (Merrimack, N.H.) chipped in with eight points and a team-high 10 boards.

Middlebury led almost the entire first half, going up by 11 points on two occasions, before the hosts battled back to take a one-point lead (25-24) at the break. There were 13 lead changes in the second half, with neither team leading by more than four points, and the 58-all deadlock at the end of regulation was the eighth tie score of the game.

It was all Middlebury in the extra session, as the visitors scored the first eight points and never looked back. PSU got as close as three points with 1:30 on the clock, but Middlebury was too strong in the end.

PSU wraps up the first semester with a Little East Conference game this Saturday at Rhode Island College (1:00 p.m.) Middlebury is back in action Thursday with a non-conference game at Green Mountain College (6:00 p.m.)
