PSU Women’s Basketball falls to Norwich in season opener

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Junior Caitlin Bailey (Barre, Vt.) and senior Sarah Chap (Stockbridge, Vt.) both recorded double-doubles Saturday evening to lead Norwich University to a 79-64 victory over Plymouth State University in the opening game of the Cobblestone Inn Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.

Bailey led all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds, connecting on 8-of-11 from the field, while Chap finished with 15 points and 10 boards, making 6-of-10 shots from the floor. Sophomore Kayleigh Shappy (Burlington, Vt.) also scored 15 points for the Cadets, and freshman Jess Jaggars (Vergennes, Vt.) came off the bench to add 11 points.

Plymouth State had two players reach double figures in scoring - senior Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass.) with 12 points and freshman Karly Gray (Southampton, Mass.) with 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Norwich came out strong and took control of the game, leading most of the first half. The Cadets extended the lead to double digits (23-13) with 8:30 to play in the half, and both teams doubled their score from that point to make it a 46-26 margin at the break.

Plymouth State pulled to within 15 points (55-40) five minutes into the second half, but Norwich went on a 12-5 to push the lead back up to 22 points (67-45) and coasted home with the win.

Norwich, 1-0, will meet Westfield State in Sunday's championship game at 3:00 p.m., with PSU, 0-1, battling Simmons College in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m. Westfield State defeated Simmons, 64-51, in Saturday's second first-round game. Owls to meet Norwich in Championship game

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, Mass.) scored 19 points and collected a game-high 10 rebounds Saturday night to lead Westfield State College to a 64-51 victory over Simmons College in the second game of the Cobblestone Inn Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.

Wasuk converted 8-of-15 shots from the field, while grabbing nine of her 10 rebounds off the offensive glass. She got offensive help from classmate Lauren Sylvain (Hadley, Mass.), who made four three-point field goals and finished with 14 points.

Sophomore Sarah Clayton (East Falmouth, Mass.) led all scorers, dropping in 20 points for Simmons in the losing effort. Sophomore Lauren Kreckie (Braintree, Mass.) added 10 points and four assists for the Sharks.

Both teams started slowly in the first 20 minutes, Simmons shooting only 20 percent from the floor in an 18-point first half and Westfield State connecting on 40 percent from the floor. The Owls outscored Simmons 13-4 over the last seven minutes of the half to take a 29-18 lead at the break.

The Sharks pulled to within six points (33-27) five minutes into the second half, but Westfield State scored the next eight points to regain a 14-point lead and never looked back.

Westfield State, 1-0, will face Norwich in Sunday's championship game at 3:00 p.m., with Simmons, 0-1, battling host Plymouth State in the consolation game at 1:00 p.m. Norwich defeated PSU, 79-64, in Saturday's opening game.
