PSU Women’s Basketball holds off Simmons

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University's women's basketball teams had one of its highest scoring games in five years Sunday afternoon at Foley Gymnasium, defeating Simmons College 94-85 in the consolation game of the Cobblestone Inn Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament.

The 94 points is the most PSU has scored in a 40-minute game since defeating Gordon, 108-77, on Nov. 27, 2001. The Panthers finished with 94 or more points once each of the last two years, but both of those came in double overtime contests.

Junior Joy DePalo (Sunapee, N.H.) led the Panthers with 19 points, connecting on 4-of-7 from three-point range. DePalo was one of four PSU scorers to reach double figures, as senior Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass.) added 15 points, sophomore Annie Alosa (Concord, N.H.) contributed 14, and junior Lauren Daniels (Concord, N.H.) came off the bench to chip in with 11 points.

Linehan was PSU's representative on the All-Tournament Team after averaging 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in the two games.

The Sharks were led by sophomore Sarah Clayton (East Falmouth, Mass.), an All-Tournament Team selection. She tossed in 25 points Sunday after a 20-point performance in Saturday's first-round game. Clayton was one of four players to score in double figures on Sunday, as sophomore Lauren Kreckie (Braintree, Mass.) chipped in with 20 points, junior Nikki Cohen (Wellesley, Mass.) contributed 13 points and seven boards, and sophomore Kelly Larkin (Topsfield, Mass.) finished with 10 points.

Simmons took an early lead against the Panthers, pulling ahead by 10 points (25-15) midway through the first half. PSU battled back to tie it at 35-35 with five minutes to play, and went up by five points (47-42) at the break.

Plymouth State maintained the lead throughout the second half. Simmons got to within one point at 61-60 with 11 minutes remaining, but PSU regained a 10-point lead and held off the Sharks the rest of the way.

Cadets rout Westfield State in title game

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Norwich University used a total team effort Sunday afternoon to defeat Westfield State College, 65-43, and capture the championship of the Cobblestone Inn Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.

The Cadet defense held Westfield State to a 29.4 percent shooting clip while outrebounding the Owls, 42-27. Norwich shot 48 percent as a team and ran away with the title.

Norwich senior Sarah Chap (Stockbridge, Vt.) was named tournament Most Valuable Player after averaging 12 points, 8.5 rebounds and 5.0 blocks in the two games. She had nine points, seven rebounds five assists and three blocks in the championship game. Chap was joined on the All-Tournament Team by junior Caitlin Bailey (Barre, Vt.), who averaged 12 points and 7.5 boards over the weekend.

The Cadets got a team-high 13 points from sophomore Kayleigh Shappy (Burlington, Vt.) in the championship game, while classmate Monica Selander (Caribou, Maine) came off the bench to add 12 points.

Sophomore Andrea Wasuk (Lenox, Mass.) scored 19 points for Westfield State in both the first-round win over Simmons and the title game, and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Junior Becky Passetto (Housatonic, Mass.) added 10 points off the Owls bench.

It was anyone's game most of the first half. Westfield led by one (16-15) with six minutes to play before Norwich went on a 13-3 burst to go ahead 28-19 with a minute to go, and the Cadets held a 30-21 margin at the intermission. Norwich slowly pulled away in the second half, maintaining a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

The Cadets finished 25-5 last season and participated in the NCAA Tournament.
