WestConn downs Plymouth State in women’s basketball

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Jennifer Kancler (Columbia, Conn.) hit five three-point shots and finished with a game-high 22 points Saturday afternoon to lead the Western Connecticut State University women's basketball team to an 88-61 victory over Plymouth State University in the Little East Conference opener for both schools at Foley Gymnasium.

Kancler was 5-of-8 from beyond the three-point line and 6-of-11 overall. Sophomore Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) came off the bench to score 17 points and collect a game-high eight rebounds for the Colonials, and junior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn.) added 13 points.

The Panthers got 16 points off the bench from senior Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass.), and 10 points and a team-high six rebounds from junior Lauren Daniels (Concord, N.H.) Junior Joy DePalo (Enfield, N.H.) chipped in with nine points.

It was a close game for the first 10 minutes, with the visitors holding just a four-point lead (17-13). The Colonials outscored PSU 15-3 over the next four minutes to extend the margin to 16, and they led by 18 points (47-29) at the break.

Plymouth State got as close as 12 points in the first four minutes of the second half, but WestConn responded with a 10-2 burst to get the lead back up to 20 points and PSU didn't threaten the rest of the way.

The Panthers, 1-5 overall, are back in action Tuesday in a non-conference game at Middlebury (5:30 p.m.) WestConn, 4-1, returns home to host Saint Joseph (Conn.) Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
