PSU Women’s Basketball rallies to defeat Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. - Plymouth State University used a strong second half rally Tuesday night to pull out a 71-64 victory over Lasell College in a non-conference women's basketball game.

The Panthers stopped a six-game losing streak and improved to 2-7 overall, while Lasell lost its third straight and dipped to 3-5.

Plymouth State used a team effort to capture the win. Senior Heather Thomas (Merrimack, N.H.) led the way with 12 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore Annie Alosa (Concord, N.H.) added 10 points off the bench. Junior Lauren Daniels (Concord, N.H.) and freshman Karly Gray (Southampton, Mass.) chipped in with eight points apiece.

The Lasers were led by junior Christina DeLuca (Johnston, R.I.), who finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, and senior Courtney Casserly (Stoughton, Mass.), who provided 14 points off the bench.

The teams traded the lead several times throughout the first half, with Lasell maintaining a five- point advantage (30-25) at the break. The Lasers shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the first half while PSU converted just 33.3 percent of its attempts.

The second half was a different story, as the Panthers shot 55.9 percent after intermission while Lasell cooled off to 43.8 percent. The Lasers maintained the lead much of the second half, but the Panthers wouldn't go away, never trailing by more than seven points. PSU whittled away at the deficit, and finally took its first lead of the second half, 55-54, with 5:43 remaining.

The Panthers took the lead for good, 59-58, with just under four minutes to play, and pulled away down the stretch. PSU made free throws in the final minute to gain a 10-point lead before Lasell hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final seven-point margin.

PSU returns home to wrap up the first semester with a non-conference game Saturday against Johnson & Wales at Foley Gymnasium (1:00 p.m.). Lasell visits Bay Path College Thursday at 8:00 p.m.
