PSU Womens Basketball holds off Johnson & Wales
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University women's basketball team put together solid rallies at the end of each half Saturday afternoon, and pulled out a 62-58 victory over Johnson & Wales University in a non-conference game at Foley Gymnasium.
Freshman Karly Gray (Southampton, Mass.) led the Panthers with 11 points, including a pair of key three-point baskets in the final three minutes of the game. Senior Kaitlin Linehan (South Boston, Mass.) was the only other Panther to score in double figures with 10 points as 12 different PSU players got into the scoring column.
Freshman Alexia Ramirez (San Marcos, Calif.) turned in a strong effort for the Wildcats, finishing with a game-high 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Shannon Hunter (Thoreau, N.M.) added 12 points off the bench and classmate Maria Valletta (Greenville, R.I.) chipped in with 11 points.
The visitors led most of the first half, but PSU went on a 10-2 spurt over the last six minutes, scoring the final six points of the half, to go into the locker room with a 33-27 advantage. The Wildcats regained the lead early in the second half, and maintained the margin until Gray hit a three-pointer for PSU with 3:19 remaining to tie the game at 52-52.
It was still tied, 58-58, with less than a minute remaining, when Linehan made a shot in traffic with 20 seconds remaining and PSU added a pair of free throws in the final seconds to close out the win.
PSU won its second straight contest heading into the break for final exams and the holidays. The Panthers, 3-7 overall, return to action on Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007, with a Little East Conference match-up at UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.)
