PSU Women’s Hoop takes title in Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament

              PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University took a double digit lead midway through the first half Saturday afternoon and maintained the advantage the rest of the game en route to a 58-43 victory over New England College in the championship game of the 2007 Days Inn of Campton Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament at Foley Gymnasium.

              Freshman Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) led the Panthers with 12 points and seven rebounds, converting 6-of-11 from the field.  Senior Lauren Daniels (Concord, N.H./Concord) contributed eight points and eight rebounds and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and sophomore Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) added nine points, five rebounds and three blocked shots to earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.

              PSU had a 13-point lead (16-3) just nine minutes into the game.  NEC was as close as nine points (24-15) with six minutes to go in the first half, but the Panthers pulled away to a 36-17 margin by halftime.  PSU maintained the double digit lead throughout the second half.

              Wellesley College knocked off Daniel Webster College in the consolation game, 50-38. The Blue took an 11-point lead (15-4) midway through the first half, but DWC battled back and outscored Wellesley 17-2 the rest of the half to take a 21-17 lead at the break. Daniel Webster maintained a narrow margin for much of the second half, but Wellesley took the lead with just under five minutes remaining and outscored the Eagles 17-5 down the stretch.

              The rest of the All-Tournament team included NEC senior Laura Valeika (Woonsocket, R.I.), Wellesley junior Jessica Duff (Milton Abingdon, UK) and Daniel Webster senior Erin Moseley (Sterling, Mass.) 

                 Plymouth State, 2-0, will be home again on Tuesday with a non-conference game against Castleton State (5:30 p.m.)
