WestConn posts LEC win over Plymouth State in women’s basketball

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Western Connecticut State University took a double-digit lead less than seven minutes into the game Saturday afternoon and never looked back, posting a 70-41 victory over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference women's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium.

            Freshman Heather Lee (Seymour, Conn.) led the Colonials, connecting on four three-point field goals and finishing with a game-high 16 points.  Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) added 14 points and senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn.) chipped in with 13 for the winners.

            WestConn won its fourth straight game and 12th in its last 13 outings to improve to 15-3 overall.  The Colonials are 8-1 in conference play, just a game behind league-leading Southern Maine.  PSU suffered its third straight setback and fell to 8-11 overall and 2-7 in the Little East.

            Freshman Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) came off the bench and scored 14 points to lead the Panthers.  Sophomore Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) had a solid effort for PSU, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds, scoring all nine points from the free throw line.

            The Colonials never trailed in the game. They went ahead by 11 points (14-3) early on, and led by 18 points (23-5) at the midway mark of the first half.  PSU got as close as 12 points (23-11) with 5:45 to play, but WestConn got the lead back up to 20 points at halftime (36-16).  The visitors coasted home with the win in the second half.

            The Panthers out-rebounded WestConn 39-35, but struggled in the shooting department, connecting on just 22 percent from the field.

            PSU plays its next two game on the road, beginning Wednesday with a non-conference affair at Lyndon State College (5:30 p.m.)  WestConn plays a non-conference tilt Tuesday at Trinity College (7:30 p.m.)
