PSU Womens Hoop falls to WestConn in LEC Tournament
DANBURY, Conn. - Junior Stacey Roberts (Windham, Conn.) led a balanced scoring attack Tuesday night as third-seeded Western Connecticut State University ran past sixth-seeded Plymouth State University, 64-43, in the first round of this year's Little East Conference Women's Basketball Tournament at Feldman Arena.
WestConn advances to the LEC Tournament semi-finals on Friday at top-seeded University of Southern Maine, where it will play second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University at 5:30 p.m. The Warriors defeated UMass Boston, 75-68. Friday's second semi-final pits host USM and fourth-seeded Keene State College. The Huskies defeated UMass Dartmouth, 79-31 and the Owls upended Rhode Island College, 58-46 in the other LEC quarterfinal games.
Roberts finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots for the Colonials. Sophomore Katie Moffo (Southington, Conn.) added 12 points and eight rebounds, and senior Ally Greenwood (East Hartford, Conn.) tallied 10 points to go with eight assists and six steals. Freshman Melissa Teel (Hamden, Conn.) collected a game-high 12 rebounds, while contributing nine points and five blocked shots.
Senior Joy DePalo (Enfield, N.H.) and freshman Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) led Plymouth State with nine points apiece, and senior Lauren Daniels (Concord, N.H.) grabbed 10 rebounds, her fourth straight double-digit rebounding effort.
After taking a four-point lead into the locker room at intermission (28-24), WestConn came out and outscored the Panthers, 36-19 in the second stanza.
Plymouth State pulled within one point, 28-27, but the Colonials went on to score 18 of the game's next 24 points to take a 46-33 lead with 10:27 remaining in the game. The Colonials would pull ahead by as many as 23 points down the stretch. PSU completed its season at 11-16, a five-game improvement over last year.
