PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Little East Conference continued its weekly honors program on Monday, and two Plymouth State University basketball players were recognized for their performances in Panther games last week.
Junior Laura Kent (Bellingham, Mass.) was named LEC Women's Basketball Player of the Week, and junior Jason O'Keefe (Everett, Mass.) was on the LEC Weekly Honor Roll. It is the second LEC weekly honor for both this season, as O'Keefe was the Player of the Week and Kent was on the Honor Roll once each last month.
A 5'11" forward, Kent (right) averaged 20.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for the Panthers, shooting 61.9 percent from the field and 78.9 from the free throw line. She scored 21 points in Thursday's non-conference win over UMaine Farmington, including six points in an 11-0 stretch in overtime that sealed the win, and she added 20 points and nine rebounds in Saturday's LEC win at Rhode Island College. She was 6-of-11 from the floor against UMF and 7-of-10 vs. RIC.
Kent is enjoying a strong season for the Panthers and ranks third in the conference in scoring (14.4 ppg) and tied for ninth in rebounding (6.5 rpg). She is also tied for second in field goal percentage (50.0), second by herself in free throw percentage (85.5), and sixth in blocked shots (1.0 bpg).
A 6'3" guard, O'Keefe (left) averaged 20.0 points in a 1-2 week for the Panthers, which included a loss to pre-season favorite RIC in the only LEC game of the week. He had a game-high 22 points in a non-conference loss to Bowdoin on Tuesday, added 25 points in a non-conference win over UMaine Farmington on Thursday, and finished up the week Saturday with 13 points in the setback to RIC. O'Keefe shot 46.7 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from three-point land, sinking 9-of-21 from long range.
O'Keefe's sharp-shooting has him ranked second in the LEC in scoring (16.4 ppg). He is also second in three-point field goals made (2.5 per game) and fifth in three-point field goal percentage (40.5).
The Panther squads play a pair of LEC games this week, hosting UMass Boston on Tuesday (women at 5:30 p.m., men at 7:30 p.m.) and visiting UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (women at 1:00 p.m., men at 3:00 p.m.) The PSU women will also play a non-conference game Thursday at Johnson State (7:00 p.m.)
