PSU Basketball players named to All-N.H. First Teams

(2009-10 NCAA Division III All-New Hampshire Teams)

           PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Four members of the Plymouth State University basketball teams, two women and two men, have been recognized as members of the NCAA Division III All-State Team for the 2009-10 season, as voted by the Division III head coaches in New Hampshire.

           Junior Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West) and sophomore Alicia Doucet (Manchester, N.H./Central) represented the Panther women’s team as All-NH First Team selections, and seniors Jason O’Keefe (Everett, Mass./Everett) and Mike Chergey (Bow, N.H./Bow) were All-NH First Team choices on the men’s side.  In addition, PSU men’s coach John Scheinman was voted Division III New Hampshire Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

Alicia Doucet Amanda Kania            Kania was the New Hampshire Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2007-08 and has been a First Team selection the past two years, and Doucet was the N.H. Rookie of the Year last season.  O’Keefe and Chergey are first-time picks.

           A 5'11" forward, Kania (near right) repeated as a Second Team All-Little East Conference selection this year after averaging 14.4 points and 6.9 rebounds.  She also made 47 three-pointers, shooting 33 percent from beyond the arc.  Doucet (far right), also a 5'11" forward, led the Panthers and ranked second in the conference this winter with 15.6 points per game, along with 8.1 rebounds per contest, fifth- best in the LEC.  Kania and Kent were two of the top players that led PSU to a 17-11 overall record after advancing to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Tournament championship game.

Mike Chergey Jason O'Keefe            Chergey (far left) and O’Keefe (near left) shared the PSU men’s scoring lead this season with 14.0 points per game.  A 6’6” forward, Chergey added 4.2 rebounds per game while making 36 three-point field goals and shooting 40 percent from three-point range, earning All-LEC Second Teams honors; O’Keefe, a 6’3” guard, averaged 3.5 rebounds while sinking 25 long-range shots.  They will also be tied together for each scoring their 1000th career point in the same game, a win over Southern Maine on Jan, 19th.  Chergey and O’Keefe helped the Panther men to a 16-11 overall record and their first ECAC post-season berth in four years,

Head Men's Basketball Coach John Scheinman            Scheinman (right), who has coached PSU for 10 seasons, has guided the Panthers to a four-game improvement the last two seasons. He led the team to its first winning season in four years.

            The All-State teams include student-athletes from the six Division III schools in New Hampshire, Plymouth State and Keene State College from the Little East Conference, Colby-Sawyer College and New England College from the Commonwealth Coast Conference, Rivier College of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, and Daniel Webster College of the New England Collegiate Conference.
