Panthers fall to preseason favorites
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Rachel Riley scored a game-high 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds Saturday afternoon as Rhode Island College defeated Plymouth State University, 84-55, in the Little East Conference women's basketball opener for both schools at Foley Gym.
Riley connected of 12-of-14 shots from the field for 27 points in 27 minutes of action. Classmate Cynthia Gaudet added 20 points, including 9-of-9 from the free throw line. RIC, the preseason favorite to capture the LEC crown, improves to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while PSU drops to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in the Little East.
The Anchorwomen came out of the gate strong and took a double-digit lead (11-1) less than six minutes into the game. It was a 15-point margin (22-7) at the midway point of the half, and a 20-point game (44-24) at halftime. A stifling RIC defense limited PSU to 22 percent shooting.
Plymouth State came alive in the second half, whittling the deficit down to 12 points (55-43) with 13 minutes to play. The Anchorwomen answered with a 13-5 burst to get the lead back up to 20 points, and PSU didn't threaten the rest of the way.
RIC shot 54 percent for the game while holding PSU to a 26 percent clip. The visitors also finished with a 46-39 advantage on the boards.
The Panthers are back in action Thursday when they host Lyndon State College in a non-conference affair at Foley Gym. RIC returns home to host Salve Regina University on Tuesday.
