Walsh, Lewis lead Panthers to non-conference win
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Kellie Walsh scored a game-high 13 points and collected six steals Tuesday evening as the Plymouth State University women's basketball team stopped a nine-game losing streak with a 63-27 victory over Lesley University in non-conference action at Foley Gym.
Walsh was one of three Panthers to score in double figures as freshman Tiffany Lewis added a season-high 12 points and six rebounds and sophomore Krystin Corliss contributed 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds. PSU picked up its third win of the year (3-15) while the Lynx remain winless in 17 tries.
Lesley had a balanced attack, with junior Chelsea Contre, freshman Carrie Fieger and sophomore Sarah Apgar scoring six points each. Apgar also topped the Lynx with eight rebounds and five steals.
Fieger scored the first basket of the game for Lesley, but PSU scored 15 of the next 17 points to open up a 15-4 lead just five minutes into the game. The Panthers got the margin up to 15 points (21-6) with eight minutes to play in the half. The Lynx came alive with an 11-4 spurt that cut the margin down to eight points (25-17) in the final minute of the half before the teams went to the locker room with PSU leading by 10, 27-17.
PSU opened the second half by scoring the first 10 points, extending the lead to 20 points with 13 minutes remaining, and Lesley didn't challenge the rest of the way.
The Panthers play another non-conference home game Thursday against Johnson State College, while Lesley plays a New England Collegiate Conference contest Thursday at Becker College.
