Galvin tops Panthers on Senior Day
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman center Kristen Morrison posted an impressive double-double with 22 points and 16 rebounds Saturday afternoon as the University of Massachusetts Boston outlasted Plymouth State University in overtime, 75-69, in a Little East Conference women's basketball contest at Foley Gym.
Freshman guard Lauren Perra led all scorers with 23 points for the Beacons, including nine in overtime, and junior Teresa Pina added 10 points. UMB stopped a six-game losing streak and moved to 6-16 overall and 3-9 in conference play.
Senior Michaela Galvin topped the Panthers with 18 points and seven rebounds, converting 3-of-5 from three-point range. Junior Kellie Walsh added 11 points but the Panthers slipped to 5-17 overall and 1-11 in LEC games.
The Panthers battled from behind early after falling behind 10-0 in the first five minutes, answering with a 10-0 run of their own. UMB regained the lead on five unanswered points from Perra and went on to a 32-23 lead at halftime.
The Beacons maintained their nine-point margin early in the second half until PSU went on another 10-point burst, capped by a Galvin three-pointer, that gave the Panthers a 41-40 lead. It stayed a one or two-possession game until PSU pulled ahead by seven points, 58-51, with 4:40 to play, but Morrison and junior Elisa Ogawa combined for seven straight for UMB to knot the game at 58 with less than three minutes left in regulation.
PSU junior Katie Seraikas and Morriston traded a pair of free throws with a minute and a half to play, and neither team was able to convert several opportunities in the final minute of regulation, forcing the extra session.
Perra came alive for UMB in overtime, scoring the first six Beacon points and scoring nine in the five-minute frame. Her traditional three-point play with two minutes remaining put UMB up by six (71-65) and PSU couldn't recover.
