Plymouth State names new women’s basketball coach

Former Central Conn. assistant Liz Stich joins Panther staff

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's basketball program has a new leader with the announcement of a new head coach for the 2012-13 season.

Liz Stich has been named the new PSU women's basketball coach.  A graduate of the University of Hartford and former four-year letterwinner, two-year starter and team captain for the Hawks, Stich has been an assistant women's basketball coach the past four years at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. She takes over from Lauren Lavigne, who resigned this spring after 14 seasons as Panther head coach and now has additional administrative responsibilities for PSU Athletics.

A native of New Hartford, Conn, Stich served four years at Central Connecticut under head coach Beryl Piper after one season as an assistant at Longwood University in Farmville, Va.  She was on the staff of the largest turnaround in NCAA Division I four years ago as the team improved from four wins in 2008 to 18 in 2009.

"We are delighted to welcome Liz to the Plymouth State Athletics family," said PSU associate director of athletics Kim Bownes.  "She is very knowledgeable, has a passion for basketball and has been successful as a leader all along the way as a player and a coach.  We are confident she will be a strong leader for us and we're looking forward to working with her to add another chapter for our successful women's basketball program."

Stich played for Jennifer Rizzotti at Hartford from 2001-05 and was a student assistant coach during the 2005-06 season. The Hawks made NCAA appearances three times - 2002, 2005 and 2006 - during her five seasons at Hartford. She earned the team's hustle award from 2003-05 and was an all-tournament team honoree at University of Hawaii Invitational in 2003. She averaged 6.1 points and 3.5 boards for her career.

Stich attended St. Paul Catholic High School in Bristol, Conn., graduating as the all-time leading scorer. She captained the 2001 team to the Class S State Championship and was a three-time USA Today Honorable Mention All-American and a two-time Street & Smith Honorable Mention All-American.

"I am excited for the opportunity to take over the reins of women's basketball program at Plymouth State," said Stich. "I am enthralled with the Division 3 spirit of allowing the student-athletes to be balanced and complete people, yet that won't diminish our expectations on the court. I want to help give our student-athletes every chance to succeed, and we will strive for excellence in the classroom, on the court and in the community. I want to thank everyone at PSU for their time and energy throughout the hiring process.  The fact that so many were willing to go above and beyond helped me realize that this is the right place for me."
