Panthers drop LEC contest to Corsairs

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Colleen Moriarty (Canton, Mass.) scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds Saturday afternoon as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth defeated Plymouth State University, 69-47, in a Little East Conference women's basketball game at Foley Gym.

Freshman Beth Castantini (Newburyport, Mass.) added 14 points for the Corsairs.  Freshman Stephanie Antoine (New Bedford, Mass.) collected 10 rebounds and sophomore Kelsey Garrity (Somerville, Mass.) grabbed five as UMD finished with a 56-35 advantage on the boards.  The Corsairs took control early and never let up, streaking to their fourth straight win and improving to 7-1 overall (2-0 LEC).

Junior Meghan Faretra (Bow, N.H./Tilton School) topped the home team with nine points and seven rebounds, making 3-of-6 from three-point range.  Sophomore Kristen Hrubowchak (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) added eight points off the bench, and junior Krystin Corliss (Loudon, N.H./Merrimack Valley) and freshman Bry Bennett (Lancaster, N.H./White Mountains Regional) contributed seven points each.

PSU got off to a rough start, missing its first 14 shots from the field and falling behind 21-1 midway through the first half.  Six different Corsairs scored during the rally, led by Castantini with seven points.  The Panthers bounced back, making their next four shots to get the deficit down to 14 points (23-9) with seven minutes remaining, but that's as close as they would get.  UMD outscored PSU 16-8 for the rest of the first half, taking a 39-17 advantage into the locker room.

The Corsairs scored the first six points of the second half, and maintained a 20-point margin the rest of the way.

PSU, 1-6 overall and 0-2 in the LEC, is home again on Tuesday to host Emerson College in a non-conference contest (6:00 p.m.)  UMD plays a non-conference game Monday at Johnson & Wales (7:00 p.m.)
