UMass Boston too strong for PSU Women’s Hoop

Three Panthers score in double figures

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Brittany Moore (Billerica, Mass.) scored a game-high 21 points and collected 10 rebounds off the bench Tuesday evening as the University of Massachusetts Boston ran past Plymouth State University, 89-50, in Little East Conference women's basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.

            Moore made 9-of-13 shots from the field and was one of four Beacons to score in double figures.  Freshman Olivia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) tallied 16 points, senior Teresa Pina (Boston, Mass.) added 15 and sophomore Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) chipped in with 13 as the Beacons improved to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

            Plymouth State had three players score in double figures as junior Krystin Corliss (Loudon, N.H./Merrimack Valley) finished with a team-high 14 points while classmate Meghan Faretra (Bow, N.H./Tilton School) added 12 points on four three-pointers, and freshman Hannah Andry (Melrose, Mass.) contributed 11 points off the bench.

            The Beacon defense held PSU to a 29 percent shooting clip while out-rebounding the home team by a 61-28 count.

            It was a close game for the first eight minutes, with the visitors holding a two-point lead (12-10).  UMB went on a 14-3 burst over the next seven minutes to open up a 13-point advantage (26-13) with 5:40 to play.  The Beacons closed out the half on a 19-11 run to take a 45-24 lead into the locker room.  Moore had 14 of her 21 points in the opening half.

            UMB scored the first nine points of the second half and never looked back.

            PSU, 1-11 overall and 0-4 in the LEC, plays a non-conference game Thursday at Norwich.  UMB returns home to host Bridgewater State Thursday in a non-conference affair.
