#13 Huskies power past Panthers

            GORHAM, Maine – Senior guard Nicole Garland (Portland, Maine) scored a game-high 19 points on 5-for-6 shooting from three-point range Tuesday afternoon to lead the 13th-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 91-52 win over the Plymouth State University Panthers in a Little East Conference women's basketball game at Hill Gymnasium.

            Ranked 13th in the latest national poll, Southern Maine remains undefeated at 18-0 overall and 8-0 in the Little East. The Huskies led wire-to-wire connecting on three-of-three buckets in the paint for a quick 6-0 lead.  Sophomore Rebecca Knight (Alfred, Maine) scored the Huskies first two baskets, while senior Jordan Grant (Concord, N.H.) notched the third.  The Huskies made it 9-0 after Garland sank the first of her five three-pointers of the game.

            Plymouth State made it a six-point game, 11-5, on a three from sophomore Tiffany Lewis (Hillsboro, N.H.), but the Huskies were never threatened quickly scoring the next eight points for a 19-5 lead five minutes into the game and taking a commanding 47-28 lead at the break.

            Southern Maine continued its hot-shooting and surged to a 68-35 lead with a 21-7 run to open the first five minutes of the second half. Garland scored eight of her 19 points in the run as USM led by as many as 42 points late in the game.

            Along with her 19 points, Garland finished with a game-high six assists and three steals to lead Southern Maine.  Grant added 15 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Knight chipped in with 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.

            Junior guard Krystin Corliss (Barnstead, N.H.) led the Panthers with 16 points.  Freshman Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.) added 13 points and three assists on 4-for-5 shooting and junior Meghan Faretra (Bow, N.H.) tossed in 10 points.

            Southern Maine travels to Western Connecticut on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in Little East action.  Plymouth State travels to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) also for a LEC contest.
