Deering, Perry top Panthers with 12 points apiece
CONCORD, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's basketball team suffered a 65-52 defeat to Rivier University Tuesday evening in the Boys & Girls Club Classic, hosted by New Hampshire Technical Institute.
Junior Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H.) led the Raiders (1-0) with a game-high 21 points on 7-for-18 shooting. Freshman Rebecca DeBaldo (Pelham, N.H.) made an impressive debut as she netted 12 points while shooting 50 percent from the floor. Classmate Savannah Butterfield (Londonderry, N.H.) added nine points and two2 blocked shots, and senior Erin Sweeney (Chicopee, MA) also contributed five points and six rebounds.
Plymouth State (0-3) was guided by the combination of senior Kait Deering (Sidney, Maine) and sophomore Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.), who scored 12 points apiece. Deering connected on 5-ofo-9 field goal attempts and also grabbed six rebounds. Senior Krystin Corliss (Loudon, N.H.) added nine points and eight rebounds, making 3-of-5 from three-point range.
The Panthers held the lead early on, as Deering made a couple buckets and Perry hit a pair of three-pointers. PSU's highest lead was six points, 19-13, after a three-pointer by freshman Rosalie Edmonds (Goffstown, N.H.)
Rivier then turned the tables, going on a 19-3 burst to take a 10-point lead (32-22) with three minutes to go in the half. Butterfield led the Raiders with nine points in the rally, and Rivier went into the locker room with an eight-point margin, 34-26.
Deering scored the first four points of the second half on a layup and two free throws to cut the Panther deficit to four points, but the Raiders went on a 9-2 burst to get the lead back to double digits with 14 minutes to play. PSU kept pressing and a pair of Corliss three-pointers and a layup by Edmonds got the margin down to five points at the 13-minute mark. That's as close as the Panthers would get in the second half.
PSU is back in action Saturday with the home opener at Foley Gym against Lyndon State College (1:00 p.m.). Rivier will travel to Bridgewater, Massachusetts this Friday to take on Hunter College in the opening round of the Bridgewater State Tip-Off Tournament.
