Lawrence, Miller lead Panthers to victory over in-state rival
CONCORD, N.H. – Sophomores DeAsia Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) and Savannah Miller (Smithtown, N.Y.) led Plymouth State University to a 46-41 win over in-state rival Rivier University Tuesday night in the opening game of the 2014 Boys & Girls Club Classic, hosted by NHTI.
Lawrence poured in 14 points, including a clutch three-pointer with 1:04 remaining in the game, to go along with eight rebounds. Miller posted her first double-double of the season, adding 10 points and 10 rebounds.
With 41 seconds remaining, Rivier sophomore Savanah Butterfield (Londonderry, N.H.) hit a driving layup to cut Plymouth State's lead to three. Miller was immediately fouled and missed the front-end of a one-and-one, but a key offensive rebound by Panther sophomore Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) gave Plymouth another possession. Miller was fouled again and this time nailed both free throws to ice the game for Plymouth.
Rivier held its biggest lead of the game (13-6) just eight minutes in, but Plymouth State used a 6-0 spurt to close out the first half with a 24-20 lead. The second half was a back-and-forth affair with five ties and four lead changes. Plymouth held its biggest lead (30-24) five minutes into the second half before the Raiders used a 6-0 run of their own to tie the score at 30 with 12 minutes to go. From there neither team led by more than two until Lawrence's three-pointer.
Rivier senior Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H.) led all scorers with 15 points and added seven rebounds, while Butterfield posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Plymouth State (2-1) next plays Saturday at Lyndon State (1:00 p.m.), while Rivier (0-3) looks for its first win Thursday at Fitchburg State (7:00 p.m.).
