Perry, Wyland, Collins lead Panther offense
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Caroline Brasa (East Hartford, Conn.) and sophomores Samantha Smith (Wallingford, Conn.) and Emily Dobson (Westerly, R.I.) combined to score 62 points to lead Western Connecticut State University over Plymouth State University, 76-36, in Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball at Foley Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.
Brasa posted her ninth double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 25 points to go with 11 rebounds. Dobson finished with 19 points and five rebounds, while Smith added 18 points, five rebounds and four assists. The three Colonials were a combined 22-of-39 from the floor (56.4%), including 7-of-10 from three-point range.
Junior Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.) came off the bench to lead the Panthers with 15 points. Perry was 5-of-10 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from long-range. Sophomore Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) and senior Kelley Collins (Groveton, N.H.) added eight and six points respectively, and both players pulled down six rebounds.
Wyland got PSU on the board early, scoring the game's first basket on a layup from the left side. Plymouth trailed 11-7 midway through the opening half, when WCSU pulled ahead with an 8-0 run. Wyland scored on a runner in the lane off an inbounds play to stop the run with just over seven minutes remaining in the half, but Smith hit a deep straight-on three and the Colonials went up 24-9.
Perry hit a wide open three from the right wing off a skip pass from sophomore Ace Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) to trail 26-12 with just over four minutes in the half. Smith put Western ahead 36-14 at the break after grabbing a defensive rebound and going the length of the floor to lay it in.
The Panthers opened the second half with a quick four points, forcing a WCSU timeout. After a pair of Colonials free throws, senior Tiffany Lewis (Hillsboro, N.H.) hit a driving layup to cut the lead to 38-20 with 17:33 remaining, but Brasa buried back-to-back threes, followed by five straight from Smith to push the lead to 49-20.
WCSU used a 12-2 run over the next five minutes and, after a pair of Perry free throws, another Brasa three followed by a Dobson layup pushed the lead to 66-26. PSU held the Colonials to just three free throws over the next five minutes to chip away at the lead, but Dobson and freshman Kaitlyn LaBonte (South Windsor, Conn.) combined to score the Colonials final eight points for the 76-36 win.
Plymouth State (6-14, 0-9 LEC) travels to Southern Maine for another LEC match-up Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The Panthers were nipped by the Huskies, 67-61, in overtime last month. Western Connecticut hosts LEC foe Rhode Island College Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
