Collins, Lewis have big games on Senior Day
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Rhode Island College used a 16-5 run over the final 8:13 to pull away from Plymouth State University, 66-53, in Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball Saturday afternoon at Foley Gymnasium.
Sophomore Devin Hill (Danielson, Conn.) and classmate Alex Moore (West Newbury, Mass.) led the Anchorwomen with 22 and 20 points respectively. Hill finished 9-of-15 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from three-point range, and added nine rebounds and three blocks. Moore shot 7-of-12 and added seven rebounds and six assists. Sophomore Jessica Patalano (Exeter, R.I.) had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
Plymouth State was led by senior Tiffany Lewis (Hillsboro, N.H.), who had a double-double with team-highs of 13 points (5-of-7 shooting) and 12 rebounds, to go along with three steals. Sophomore Avi Morrison (Hampton, N.H.) added 11 points, while senior Kelley Collins (Groveton, N.H.) had a near double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
A layup by sophomore Madison Beatrice (Newton, Mass.) left PSU down 6-4 after six minutes. RIC used a 20-6 run to pull ahead 26-10 with 6:30 left in the half, but Plymouth State came back with a run of its own. A Collins layup, followed by back-to-back layups by Lewis pulled the Panthers within 26-16, but Hill responded with another triple.
PSU used a 10-2 spurt over the final 4:12 of the half to cut the lead to 31-26 at the intermission. Morrison nailed a three from the left corner, followed by a nice inside move by Collins and a Lewis jumper from the right wing to end the half.
RIC scored four quick points to open the second half, all by Moore, before PSU used an 11-2 run, capped by a turnaround jumper by sophomore Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.), to tie the score at 37-37 after four-and-a-half minutes. Lawrence nailed a three from the left wing to give PSU a 40-39 lead, and a baseline jumper by Morrison pushed the lead to 42-39 with 14:13 left.
Junior Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.) hit a pair of free throws for a 44-40 lead with 12:09 to play, before RIC regained the lead with eight straight points. A layup by Perry cut the lead to 50-48 with 8:13 to play, before RIC's game-ending 16-5 run for the 66-53 win.
Prior to the game PSU honored its two seniors, Collins and Lewis, in a brief on-court ceremony.
Plymouth State will be the eighth seed in the upcoming LEC Tournament and will play on the road at top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University in the first round on Tuesday night (TBA). Rhode Island College finished the LEC regular season in seventh place and will travel to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Tuesday night for an LEC Tournament quarterfinal game.
