Balanced attack leads Panthers to non-conference win

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Plymouth State University used a 19-0 second quarter run to build a commanding lead en route to a 57-36 win over Mount Holyoke College in women's basketball on Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Panthers improve to 4-6 on the year, while the Lyons fall to 0-11.

Twelve different players scored for PSU, with freshmen Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) and Jess Conant (Canton, Maine) sharing the team-lead with eight points apiece.  Freshman Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.) added five points and a team-high five rebounds, while senior Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.) and freshman Megan Buydos (Dublin, N.H.) each contributed six points and two rebounds.

Senior Genelle Green (Windsor, Conn.) put in a strong effort off the bench for the hosts.  The guard finished with a double-double, including game-highs of 16 points and 11 rebounds, to go along with five assists and four steals.  Freshman Leah Hodges (New Haven, Conn.) added 10 points and five rebounds, while senior Siyao Sui (ShenZhen, China) chipped in with eight points and eight boards.

The Panthers would never trail in the first-ever meeting between the two teams.  Perry hit the first of her two three-pointers to give PSU a 5-2 lead in the game's opening minutes.  Conant hit a pair of jumpers and Perry's second triple helped give the Panthers a 14-11 lead after the first quarter.

Plymouth State took control in the second, scoring 19 straight points to open the frame.  Morrill scored all of her eight points in the run, which also included a straight on three from junior Ace Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) and a triple from the left wing by freshman Brittany Roche (Londonderry, N.H.).  The Lyons ended the run with a pair of baskets in the final 90 seconds to trail 33-15 at the half.

Plymouth was dominant again in the third quarter.  Senior Leah Swanson (Atkinson, N.H.) had four early points for the Panthers, before a 14-2 spurt pushed the PSU lead to 32 (55-23) late in the quarter.  The run was highlighted by a pretty dribble-drive and finish from junior Rosalie Edmonds (Goffstown, N.H.), and back-to-back threes from sophomore Meghan Livingston (Bristol, Vt.) and Roche.  A late MHC basket made the score 55-25 after three.

The Panther defense limited Mt. Holyoke to 29% shooting (14-of-48), while forcing 24 turnovers.  Plymouth State finished the game shooting 41% (23-of-56), including 38% (6-of-16) from long range.  The Panther bench outscored their counterparts 46-16.

Plymouth State returns to the hardwood on Tuesday when the Panthers host Newbury College in a non-conference game.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.  Mount Holyoke will travel to Coast Guard for a NEWMAC contest on Wednesday (7:00 p.m.).
