PSU Women’s Basketball falls to Eastern Connecticut

Lawrence's 19 points not enough in LEC setback

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Eastern Connecticut State University used a 19-4 third quarter run to defeat Plymouth State University 71-45 in Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors (8-4, 2-1 LEC) ended PSU's four-game winning streak – the program's longest since 2010.  With the loss the Panthers drop to 6-7 and 0-3 in the LEC.

ECSU jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first quarter before freshman Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) and classmate Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.) both hit jumpers for a 15-9 deficit after one.

The visitors maintained a comfortable lead into the second quarter and senior Danyelle Rodriguez (Willimantic, Conn.) put the Warriors up 25-15 at the midpoint of the second quarter.

Senior Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.) jumpstarted the Panther offense, connecting from deep to spark an 11-3 run for the hosts.  A layup from junior Savannah Miller (Smithtown, N.Y.) cut the ECSU lead to 25-22 and moments later classmate Ace Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) drained a triple from the right corner to close the gap to 28-26 at the half.

Eastern Connecticut took control over the upset-minded Panthers with a dominant third quarter.  Senior Erin Brooks (Billerica, Mass.) had nine points in the quarter and the visitors led 47-30 after three.   Brooks was key down low for the Warriors, scoring on the interior and pulling down multiple offensive rebounds in the quarter.

Lawrence opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, but ECSU responded with a 13-3 run over the next several minutes.  The two teams played even the rest of the way.

Lawrence finished with a team-high 19 points, including 3-of-6 shooting from long range.  Perry added nine points and junior Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) led the Panthers with five rebounds.

ECSU was led by Brooks and senior Jill Ritrosky (Pittsfield, Mass.).  Brooks finished with 22 points (9-of-12 shooting) and six rebounds, while Ritrosky had a double-double of 21 points (10-of-14 shooting) and 12 rebounds.

Plymouth State is back in action on Wednesday night, when the Panthers travel to the University of Massachusetts Boston for a 5:30 p.m. LEC game.  Eastern Connecticut is also back on the floor Wednesday.  The Warriors will travel to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in another LEC game (5:30 p.m.).
