Rhode Island College tops PSU Women’s Basketball

Swanson, Perry lead Panthers in LEC defeat

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Devin Hill (Danielson, Conn.) and junior Alex Moore (West Newbury, Mass.) combined for 40 points and 15 rebounds as Rhode Island College topped Plymouth State University, 55-42, in Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball action at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss the Panthers drop to 6-11 (0-7 LEC), while RIC moves to 4-11 (2-5 LEC).

A three-pointer from senior Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.) put the Panthers up 4-2 in the game's first minutes.  Junior Ace Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) connected from long range moments later to put PSU up 7-4, but Hill responded with a triple of her own on the next RIC possession.  A free thrown from junior Madison Beatrice (Newton, Mass.) gave Plymouth State a 10-8 lead with 2:04 left in the opening quarter, but the Anchorwomen closed the frame with a basket from Hill and a pair of free throws from freshman Molly Phillips (Cranston, R.I.) to hold a 12-10 lead after one.

Junior Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) tied the game at 12-12 after a layup 1:32 into the second quarter, but RIC responded with a 12-2 run over the next eight-plus minutes.  Senior Leah Swanson (Atkinson, N.H.) connected on two free throw attempts in the final seconds, leaving the Panthers with a 24-16 deficit at the half.

Perry connected from deep to start the third quarter, cutting the RIC lead to 26-19, but Moore drained three-pointers on the next three Anchorwomen possessions, sparking a 19-2 run.  Freshman Brittany Roche (Londonderry, N.H.) sank a three-pointer to stop the run with 1:31 left in the quarter.  Two free throws from Roche cut the RIC lead to 45-26, but Hill hit from deep in the closing seconds to end the quarter with the Anchorwomen leading 48-26.

Plymouth State fought to get back into the game in the final quarter, but the RIC lead was too much to overcome.  The Panthers closed the game on a 15-0 run over the final 3:16, including another deep ball from Roche and six points from Swanson.  A free thrown from freshman Liz Shepple (Bolton, Mass.) made the final score 55-42.

Perry, Swanson and Roche all finished with eight points.  Swanson added six rebounds, three steals and two assists.  Schmidt added six points and five rebounds, while freshman Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.) pulled down a team high eight rebounds.

Hill and Moore provided the firepower for Rhode Island.  Hill finished with 23 points to go along with seven boards and six blocks, while Moore finished with 17 points and eight rebounds.  Phillips added six points and 10 boards in the win.

Plymouth State kicks off a three game homestand on Wednesday night (5:30 p.m.), playing host to Southern Maine in another LEC match-up.  Rhode Island is also back in action on Wednesday, when the Anchorwomen travel to Western Connecticut State University for a 5:30 p.m. LEC contest.
