Panthers fall in LEC match-up

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's basketball team struggled to find its offensive groove, falling to UMass Dartmouth 69-52 in Little East Conference (LEC) action at Foley Gymnasium.

Junior Ace Lawrence (Middletown, Conn.) would be the top scorer for the Panthers, finishing with nine points.  Senior Taylor Perry (Simsbury, Conn.) chipped in with eight points and junior Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass.) would add eight points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Corsairs were paced by senior Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.), who had a game-high 19 points that included three from three-point range.  Senior Beth Castantini (Newburyport, Mass.) added 13 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Kane would open the scoring with a three-point shot just 18 seconds into the first quarter and the Corsairs would hold the lead for the remainder of the game.

PSU would play its best ball in the second quarter.  Trailing by as many as 10 points early, the Panthers rallied in the final five minutes to close the gap to three points (26-23), outscoring the Corsairs 15-12 in the quarter before heading into the locker room.

The third quarter began with strong defensive efforts from both sides through the opening five minutes.  Perry tied the game with a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the half, but UMD countered with five straight points.  Another triple, this time from Lawrence, brought the Panthers within two, 31-29, but PSU wouldn't get any closer.  A layup from Corsair junior Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) at the 5:06 mark sparked the visitors to a 17-5 run to close out the period with a 52-36 lead.

PSU would hang tough, matching the Corsairs through the final quarter without breaking their lead down.  Lawrence would score the final point of the game on a free throw, but the Corsairs would run out with the victory, 69-52.

PSU (6-13 overall, 0-9 LEC) will be back in action Tuesday, hosting Norwich University in non-conference action at 5:30 p.m.  UMass Dartmouth (13-6, 4-5 LEC) will host Regis College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
