PSU Women’s Basketball falls to Castleton in dramatic fashion

Conant leads Panthers with 19 Points

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Castleton University senior forward Amanda Beatty (Williston, Vt.) hit the second of two free throws to give the Spartans a 53-52 non-conference win over Plymouth State University in women's basketball action Tuesday evening at Foley Gymnasium.

The Panthers trailed 49-44 with 2:28 remaining. Junior Jess Conant (Canton, Mass.) cut the lead to three with a layup on an inside pass from classmate Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.). After a missed Castleton layup, junior Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.) grabbed the defensive rebound, then put in a layup at the other end to bring Plymouth State to within a point, 49-48 with 1:31 remaining.

Coming out of a Plymouth State timeout, Beatty was sent to the line, where she sank both free throws to expand the Spartan lead to three with less than a minute to play. PSU responded as Morrill sank a twelve-foot jumper to cut the lead to 52-50 with 0:28 remaining on the clock.

After a missed layup by Castleton, Conant grabbed her third rebound of the night and quickly called timeout. With just five seconds on the clock, the Panthers executed a midcourt inbounds play that resulted in an easy Conant layup for the tie.

CU advanced the ball to midcourt with a timeout, and the inbounds pass found Beatty open in the paint. The 6-1 forward missed, but was fouled to head to the charity stripe with just 0.03 seconds left on the clock. After missing her first attempt off the front rim, Beatty sank the second to give the Spartans a 53-52 lead. PSU had one final chance to take the lead but the inbounds pass sailed high, giving the visitors a one-point win.

Conant led all players with 19 points, shooting a game high 50.0% (6-of-12) from the field and a perfect seven-for-seven from the charity stripe. Junior Brittany Roche (Londonderry, N.H.) tallied 14 points and four rebounds. Emerson finished just shy of a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds, while Morrill dished out a game-high five assists.

The Panthers outshot the visitors from the floor (35.4% to 26.8%) and the free throw line (88.2% to 71.4%), though CU held a slight 38-33 advantage on the boards.

With the win the Spartans remain perfect to open the season (4-0), while the Panthers dip back to .500 (2-2).

Plymouth State returns to action next Tuesday (Nov. 28), when the Panthers travel to Westfield State University for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference tilt versus the Owls.
