Conant and McLaughlin post double-doubles to pace Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Jess Conant (Canton, Maine) and freshman Elizabeth McLaughlin (Melvin Village, N.H.) each posted double-digit points and rebounds in Plymouth State University's 87-69 loss to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball opener for both teams at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss the Panthers fall to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in LEC play, while the Corsairs improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in league action.
The teams remained scoreless for the game's first two minutes until UMD jumped out to a 5-0 lead. After each team exchanged points, a three-pointer from sophomore Brittany Roche (Londonderry, N.H.) closed the gap to one, at 9-8. The remainder of the first quarter saw the teams exchanging scoring runs and the Corsairs led 24-15 as the clock expired.
UMD expanded its lead to 12 in the second quarter before McLaughlin sparked a five-point run to cut the score to 32-25. UMass Dartmouth responded with an extended 23-6 surge over the next ten minutes to put the game out of reach for the Panthers.
Roche led PSU with 23 points, with Conant notching her first double-double of the year with 20 points and 13 rebounds. McLaughlin earned her second straight double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
Senior Leah Douty (Framingham, Mass.) led the Corsairs with 20 points, with classmate Alicia Kutil (Franklin, Mass.) contributing 19 points and nine rebounds. UMD was good from long range, drilling 13 three-pointers in 24 attempts (54.2%).
The Panthers will return to action on Tuesday (Dec. 5) for a non-conference tilt with Lasell College at 6:00 p.m. in Foley Gymnasium. UMass Dartmouth will also play on Tuesday, as the Corsairs travel to Westfield State for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
