Conant drops 25, Roche drains five triples to lead Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University scored 17 of the game's first 20 points on the way to a 74-45 win over Johnson State College in non-conference women's basketball action at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
PSU came out on fire, shooting a scorching 61.1% in the opening quarter while limiting Johnson State to just 2-of-21 (9.5%) shooting through the first ten minutes. Junior Jess Conant (Canton, Maine) poured in ten points in the quarter, including a number of easy interior buckets.
Sophomore Brittany Roche (Londonderry, N.H.) opened the scoring with an easy layup and back-to-back baskets by Conant made it 6-0 early. Junior Kaitlyn Brouard (Milton, Vt.) stopped the run with a straight-on three, but PSU answered with 11 straight points. Roche connected from beyond the arc after an offensive rebound and dish from junior Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) to give the Panthers a 24-6 first quarter lead.
Plymouth State started the second quarter with a 9-0 spurt to push the lead to 27 points, 33-6. Morrill hit a streaking Conant with a three-quarter court pass for an easy lay-in and Roche drained her third triple during the streak. The Badgers outscored Plymouth by an 18-11 margin over the next six minutes, but sophomore Sydney Beatrice (Newton, Mass.) sank a triple as the clock expired to send the Panthers into the locker room with a 47-24 lead.
LSC came out strong in the second half, opening the quarter with six straight points. Roche drained a fall-away three-pointer from the right corner to maintain the 20-point advantage. Roche sank her fifth triple moments later and PSU went into the fourth quarter leading 60-36.
Plymouth State coasted through the fourth quarter, with JSC never getting closer than 24.
Conant led all scorers with 25 points, the fifth time the forward has topped the 20-point mark this year. Roche ended with 17 points, including five-of-ten from long range, and added nine rebounds, while Morrill chipped in with four points, five boards, nine assists and a pair of steals. Beatrice came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points in 14 minutes. She added six rebounds and two steals in the effort.
Sophomore Christle Page (Ryegate, Vt.) led Johnson State with 16 points from the bench. Brouard added seven points and freshman Devin Libby (Burlington, Vt.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
The Panthers head into the end of semester break with a 4-6 mark, while the Badgers fall to 1-8. PSU will return to action on Jan. 3 for a 5:30 p.m., non-conference contest against Lyndon State College.
