UMass Boston pulls away from PSU Women’s Basketball

Morrill's career-high not enough for Panthers in LEC loss

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The University of Massachusetts Boston hit 13 three-pointers to get past Plymouth State University, 77-54, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball game at Foley Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

Junior Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) poured in a career-high 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting, but PSU fell to 4-9 (0-4 LEC). The Beacons extend their program-best winning streak to 12-straight games to move to 13-1 overall, while remaining a perfect 4-0 in league games.

UMass Boston's first four buckets were from beyond the arc, but a triple from sophomore Brittany Roche (Londonderry, N.H.) had the hosts in front by a 13-12 score midway through the opening quarter. Junior Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.) had back-to-back baskets to give Plymouth a 17-14 lead. A free throw from freshman Joie Grassi (Plymouth, Mass.) cut the Panther lead to 17-15 with 2:10 left in the quarter and neither team would score over the final two minutes.

Senior Lydia Vital (Cambridge, Mass.) drained one of her six triples to give the Beacons the lead to start the second quarter. Plymouth answered with a 7-2 spurt to take its biggest lead of the game, 24-20, two-and-a-half minutes into the frame. UMB responded with ten straight points to take the lead for good. Morrill got inside with a tough layup to stop the streak, but senior Katie Mathieu (Coventry, Conn.) answered at the other end and the Beacons took a 32-26 lead into halftime.

UMass Boston maintained the lead through the third. Vital extended the advantage to double figures with a triple to make it 37-26 early in the quarter. Each time it looked like the Beacons were ready to run away, PSU would answer to keep the margin within nine points. Consecutive baskets by junior Jess Conant (Canton, Maine) cut the deficit to 52-44, but Vital scored the next five points. A jumper from sophomore Alex Ricard (Manchester, N.H.) made it a 57-45 game after three.

The Beacons used an 8-2 run over the first four minutes of the final frame to seize control and the Panthers were unable to recover.

Morrill added three rebounds, five assists and two steals to her career-best performance. Conant finished with 14 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists, with Roche adding 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

Vital led all scorers with 20 points and added five assists, while Grassi added 15 points, six rebounds and five steals. Mathieu chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Panthers are back in LEC action on Saturday when they travel to Rhode Island College for a 1:00 p.m. contest. UMass Boston is also in league action on Saturday. The Beacons will travel to Western Connecticut State for a 1:00 p.m. tip off.
