PSU Women’s Basketball runs past NVU-Johnson

Conant paces Panthers with 15-point effort

JOHNSON, Vt. – Senior Jess Conant (Canton, Maine) scored a game-high 15 points to lead Plymouth State University to a wire-to-wire, 60-50 win over Northern Vermont University-Johnson in a non-conference women's basketball game at Carter Gym on Tuesday night.

Plymouth State jumped out to a 13-3 lead over the first six minutes of the first quarter and pushed the advantage to as many as 14 points in the second, but the Badgers hit from beyond the arc to cut the deficit to 34-27 at the half.

NVU-Johnson pulled to within four, 36-32, early in the third quarter, but PSU responded with a 10-2 spurt to take a 46-34 lead into the final ten minutes. Junior Cheynsse Hill (Lynn, Mass.) got to the basket to give the Panthers their biggest lead, 57-40, with 4:49 to play. After the Badgers trimmed the lead down to ten, sophomore Kiara Carr (Fairfield, Maine) hit a clutch three-pointer to secure the win.

Plymouth State improves to 7-9 on the year, while Johnson drops to 2-14.

            How it Happened:

            * Seniors Cassidy Emerson (Concord, N.H.), Debra Morrill (Concord, N.H.) and Conant combined to give the Panthers a 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter, and after a Johnson free throw, junior Brittany Roche (Londonderry, N.H.) connected from downtown to push the advantage to double figures.

            * NVU-Johnson scored the last five points of the quarter to cut the deficit to 17-10 at the end of the first.

            * Morrill had four points in an 8-0 spurt as the Panthers pushed the lead to 24-10 2:24 into the second quarter, but Johnson answered with seven straight points to make it 24-17 just a minute later.

            * PSU's lead remained around ten points through the rest of the half, until junior Mary Richardson (Vernon, Vt.) sank a triple to make it 34-27 at the break.

            * The hosts cut the lead to 36-32 in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but the Plymouth State defense buckled down from there limiting the Badgers to just two points through the rest of the frame, as PSU took a 46-34 lead into the final ten minutes.

            * Freshman Jeylly Medrano (Lynn, Mass.) buried a three to give the Panthers a 53-38 lead with 7:18 left to play, and just under three minutes later Hill's layup gave PSU its biggest lead of the game, 57-40.

            * The Badgers made one last push with seven straight points, but Carr's triple with two minutes to play iced the win for the Panthers.

            Inside the Numbers:

            * Conant led the Panthers with 15 points, while Emerson and Morrill each added ten. Emerson added six rebounds, while Morrill pulled down four boards and dished out three assists.

            * Hill chipped in with nine points and three rebounds.

            * The Badgers were led by freshmen Alexandra Barry (Hopewell Jct., N.Y.) and Melissa Ann Clark (Philadelphia, Pa.), who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

            * Johnson owned a 47-34 advantage on the boards, but the Panthers turned 26 Badgers' turnovers into 17 points.

            * PSU outscored NVU-Johnson, 26-16, in the paint.

            * All 16 players registered minutes for the Panthers.
