PSU Women's Ice Hockey posts first win of season

WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. - Sophomore Samantha Turner (Pawling, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals Saturday afternoon at Waterville Valley Ice Arena to lead the Plymouth State University women's ice hockey team to a 6-4 victory over a club team from the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

The Panthers, who were shut out by Boston University in the season opener a week ago, needed only 30 seconds to get on the board Saturday.  PSU put up five goals in the first period to take a 5-3 lead, and skated away with the first win of the season.

In addition to Turner, sophomore Krista Pettrey (Northfield, Vt.) and freshman Katelyn Quint (Conway, N.H.) registered a goal and an assist apiece for PSU, and junior Kelly Williams (Canaan, N.H.) contributed three assists. Junior Angela Potvin (Augusta, Maine) and junior Holly Williams (Wolfeboro, N.H.) each scored a goal, and freshmen Katelyn Robertson (Salem, N.Y.) and Missy Fales (West Kingston, R.I.) collected one assist apiece.

Courtney Smith led the visitors with two goals and one assist.

Sophomore Danielle Lewis (Scarborough, Maine) finished with 16 saves, while UMass goalies Nicky Ryan and Jaime Hirsch combined to make 40 saves.

Plymouth State is in its second season with a women's ice hockey program, with eyes on becoming a varsity program in the future.

PSU, 1-1, returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 30, with another home game at Waterville Valley against Norwich University (6:30 p.m.).
