Bates skates past PSU Womens Ice Hockey
LEWISTON, Maine - Sophomore Katie Nickerson (Windham, N.H.) scored the first three goals of the game, and Bates College went on to defeat Plymouth State University, 4-2, in a women's ice hockey game Saturday afternoon.
Nickerson tallied the only goal of the first period and the first two goals of the second to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Freshman Annie Mueller also tallied her first career goal to give Bates a four-goal lead through two periods.
Plymouth State mounted a comeback in the third period. Sophomore Holly Winchell (Atkinson, N.H.) put the Panthers on the board with her third goal of the season with 11 minutes remaining, assisted by sophomore Katie Barany (Middlesex, Vt.), and freshman Kim Chandler (Andover, Mass.) made it a two-goal game just 47 seconds later with her team-leading seventh of the season. But the Bobcats were able to hold off the Panthers the rest of the way.
Bates, which had a 13-7-1-1 record last year and finished 13th in the American College Hockey Association's national poll, picked up its first win of this season against Plymouth State, moving to 1-1, while the Panthers had their record evened at 3-3.
PSU plays its next two games on home ice at Waterville Valley, beginning Wednesday against the Lady Monarchs (6:00 p.m.)
